Rumor: Objection to Mehmet Simsek’s CB appointments from the Palace

If Turkish media is to believed, Mehmet Simsek is experiencing trouble staffing key positions. A conservative but anti-Erdogan columnist Taha Akyol reported that three names approached by him for key positions turned down the offer, because they are not sure Simsek will be around for long.  In this story, opposition daily Cumhuriyet claims Simsek’s proposal for Monetary Policy Council was vetoed by Erdogan’s team:

While Hafize Gaye Erkan was appointed as the Chairman of the Central Bank, it was claimed that there was tension between Mehmet Şimşek and the Presidency regarding the selection of the vice presidents and bank council members, reports claim.

After the appointment  of renown US investment banker Gaye Erkan to the seat of the Central Bank Presidency, possible changes in the names that will have a voice and vote in the policies implemented by the bank, namely the vice presidents and members of the bank council, are closely monitored.

According to the backstage information obtained by Ekonomimanset.com, Mehmet Şimşek suggested Turalay Kenç, who had previously served as the Vice President at the Central Bank, to be reappointed to the same position.

However, Kenç is a member of the economy team of the DEVA Party.

PRESIDENTIAL TEAM OBJECTED

It is alleged that upon Simsek’s suggestion of Kenç’s name for the appointment, serious objections came from the Presidency’s advisors, with the appointment  postponed for this reason. On the other hand, it is stated that Şimşek is looking for ways to appoint him to the Central Bank without the approval of the Presidency, and that Kenç may be considered for  the Board of Directors with the approval of Minister Şimşek.
