Commentary:  Erdogan Wants To Silence Social Media, He Will Fail

 

President Erdogan’s alliance (AKP-MHP) introduced a “Disinformation Prevention Act” to parliament, which is so oppressive, its own MPS are hesitant to support it.

 

  • Essentially the bill creates a new crime called “spreading malicious information” and threatens the “culprits” with 3 years of prison.

 

  • International human rights agencies and the opposition protest loudly, claiming the bill is a blow to freedom of expression.

 

  • Why does Erdogan want to silence social media?

 

  • He will fail miserably, because….
