Belgian-Turkish Defense Partnership: The 8 Billion Dollar Mission

In a significant diplomatic and economic move, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has expressed high anticipation for his upcoming visit to Ankara and Istanbul. Leading a massive delegation of 450 people, Francken described the Turkish defense industry as a “role model” and announced that the visit would facilitate the signing of 40 new bilateral agreements to drastically expand the current $8 billion in trade between the two nations.

A Strategic Economic Mission for 2026

The mission, scheduled for May 10-14, 2026, will be conducted under the presidency of Queen Mathilde and includes high-level representatives from regional governments. Francken highlighted that the delegation features between 60 and 80 defense companies, all eager to study Türkiye’s advancements in research, development, and high-tech manufacturing.

“Türkiye is a critical country, serving as a hub for Asia, the Middle East, and Europe,” Francken stated. He emphasized that the Belgian-Turkish partnership is mutually beneficial, citing 40 confirmed contracts—with more in the final stages of negotiation—as evidence of deepening commercial ties.

Defense Cooperation and NATO Synergy

Francken’s praise for Türkiye’s defense capabilities marks a pivotal shift in European perspectives. By labeling the sector a role model for innovation, he signaled Belgium’s intent to learn from Türkiye’s ability to build a robust and self-sufficient defense capacity. This cooperation comes at a vital time as both nations prepare for the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara.

Addressing recent tensions within the alliance, Francken characterized the situation as a “marriage crisis” in an 80-year relationship. He stressed that the Ankara NATO Summit is essential for maintaining dialogue, mutual understanding, and alliance cohesion.

Deep Historical and Social Ties

The Minister also pointed to the significant Turkish community living in Belgium as a bridge between the two countries. This visit aims to leverage those historic bonds to foster new collaborations between Belgian and Turkish universities, research institutes, and private corporations, ensuring that the industrial landscape in Türkiye remains a primary focus for European investment.
