High-Level Talks in Ankara
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held a series of high-level meetings in Ankara with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and Defense Minister Yaşar Güler.
According to official statements, discussions focused on preparations for the upcoming NATO Leaders’ Summit, as well as broader regional and global security developments.
Focus on Upcoming NATO Summit
The 2026 NATO Summit is scheduled to take place on July 7–8 at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.
Leaders are expected to address alliance readiness, strengthen collective defense mechanisms, and coordinate responses to evolving geopolitical risks.
Aselsan Visit Highlights Defense Capabilities
A key stop in Rutte’s visit was Aselsan, one of Türkiye’s leading defense firms.
Rutte toured production lines for air defense systems, unmanned platforms, and electronic warfare technologies, receiving briefings on ongoing projects and technical capabilities.
“A Defense Industry Revolution”
Rutte described Türkiye’s progress in defense manufacturing as transformative.
“Türkiye has undergone a defense industry revolution. What has happened in recent years can truly be described as a revolution, and Aselsan is at the forefront of it,” he said.
He emphasized that Türkiye’s capabilities contribute not only to its own national security but also to the broader security of the NATO alliance.

Technology Key to Security
Rutte stressed that increased defense spending alone is not sufficient to ensure security.
He highlighted the importance of advanced capabilities such as air defense systems, drones, ammunition, radar technologies, and space-based systems. According to Rutte, companies like Aselsan are playing a critical role in developing these capabilities across the alliance.
Integration with NATO Systems
Discussions during the visit also covered the integration of Türkiye’s domestically developed systems into NATO standards and inventories.
Other topics included the role of defense technologies in counterterrorism operations and the future integration of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems into NATO’s strategic framework.
Erdoğan Emphasizes Alliance Solidarity
President Erdoğan underlined the importance of unity among NATO allies in an increasingly unstable global environment.
He noted that Türkiye continues to expand its defense capabilities and aims to strengthen cooperation with allies, particularly in air defense systems.
Transatlantic Ties and European Role
Erdoğan also stressed the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic ties, while calling for European NATO members to take on greater responsibility within the alliance.
He added that excluding non-EU NATO members from European defense initiatives would be counterproductive.
“A More Dangerous World”
Rutte concluded that the global security environment is becoming increasingly complex and volatile.
“NATO will do whatever is necessary to protect all its allies, including Türkiye,” he said, adding that Türkiye’s defense advancements provide valuable lessons for other member states.
