Türkiye’s Consumer Confidence Index Falls by 2.3% in April

Consumer-Confidence

Turkey’s consumer confidence index dropped by 2.3% month-on-month in April, declining to 83.9, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT).

The index, calculated in collaboration with the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT) through the Consumer Tendency Survey, had stood at 85.9 in March.

Economic Expectations and Household Outlook Continue to Weaken

The component measuring household financial situation in the current period fell to 69.1, down from 70.9 in March—a decrease of 2.5%.

Meanwhile, the 12-month financial outlook for households slightly weakened, falling by 0.5% to 84.3, compared to 84.7 in the previous month.

Confidence in the general economic outlook over the next 12 months also fell, registering a 2.2% decline to 82.8, down from 84.6 in March.

The most significant drop was recorded in the sub-index measuring consumers’ intention to spend on durable goods, which fell by 3.8% to 99.3, down from 103.2 last month.

Persistent Inflation and Political Turbulence Likely Contributing

Analysts point to continued high inflation, volatile foreign exchange markets, and increasing political uncertainty as key drivers behind the erosion in consumer sentiment.

While the index remains well below the neutral threshold of 100, April’s figures reflect mounting skepticism about both household finances and the broader economic outlook in Turkey.
