CHP Leader Özel Signals Early Election Timeline, Launches Nationwide Campaign

Main opposition CHP leader Özgür Özel said elections in Türkiye are likely to be held no later than October 2027, while announcing the launch of a large-scale grassroots campaign beginning May 4. The move signals that the party is preparing for a potential early vote amid rising political uncertainty.

Campaign Kicks Off Nationwide on May 4

Özgür Özel, leader of Türkiye’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), announced that the party will effectively begin its election campaign on May 4.

Speaking to Sözcü TV, Özel said the campaign will shift into a broader, “360-degree” effort involving the entire party organization.

“From May 4, the CHP is effectively launching its election campaign,” he said.

The campaign will rely heavily on grassroots mobilization, with party officials and volunteers engaging directly with voters across the country.

Mass Mobilization: 186,000 Poll Workers Activated

Özel revealed that CHP has already identified 186,000 poll workers, far earlier than in previous election cycles.

  • 106,000 workers will begin field operations on May 4
  • Each will be responsible for approximately 300 voters
  • Door-to-door outreach will begin immediately

Workers will conduct repeated visits throughout the year, introducing themselves, explaining party policies, and maintaining direct contact with voters.

Multi-Phase Campaign Strategy

The CHP campaign will unfold in several stages:

  • Initial outreach (May–June): First rounds of voter contact
  • Summer phase: Alternative campaign activities
  • Autumn phase: Follow-up visits and expanded messaging
  • Final phase: Full-scale campaign closer to elections

Özel said both party leadership and grassroots organizations will be actively involved throughout the process.

“Elections No Later Than October 2027”

Özel also provided a clear timeline for the next elections.

“In my view, elections will be held no later than October 2027,” he said.

He added that political developments could trigger an earlier vote, stressing that the party must remain ready for a snap election at any time.

Responding to Political Pressure

Özel said the intensified campaign comes amid what he described as legal and political pressure on the party.

He noted that CHP will use the campaign to both:

  • Highlight alleged judicial pressure and rights violations
  • Present solutions to voters’ economic and social concerns

No Retreat: “We Are Shifting Gears”

Rejecting speculation that the party might scale back its activities, Özel emphasized that CHP is instead expanding its efforts.

“Instead of stepping back, we are shifting into a higher gear,” he said.

He added that local governments, MPs, and party leadership will all work in coordination to strengthen voter outreach.

Full Campaign Phase Ahead

According to Özel, the party will enter a full campaign phase roughly one year from now, followed by an intensive final stretch in the last six months before elections.

This phased strategy aims to maintain continuous engagement with voters rather than relying on short-term campaigning.

Outlook: CHP Prepares for Uncertain Election Timing

Özel’s remarks highlight CHP’s strategy of preparing for both scheduled and early elections in a volatile political environment.

Key takeaways:

  • Early election risk remains on the table
  • Opposition mobilization is accelerating
  • Grassroots campaigning is central to strategy

The coming months will be critical in shaping both the timing and dynamics of Türkiye’s next electoral contest.
