Sharaa Issues Final Ultimatum to SDF: “Integrate or Face Total War”

al sara

The Syrian transitional government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has signaled that its patience with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has officially run out. Damascus is now preparing for a large-scale military operation as the December 31 deadline for the “March 10 Integration Agreement” looms without significant progress.

The Looming “A31” Deadline

In September, President al-Sharaa issued a stern warning: if the SDF continued to stall on integrating its military and civilian structures into the new Syrian state by the end of December, Damascus would resort to military force. With only days remaining, the administration has signaled that it will no longer entertain “delaying tactics” from the SDF.

“The de-facto situation in the north, which fed off the chaos of the former regime, has lost its reason for existence following the revolution,” a senior official close to al-Sharaa told reporters in Damascus. “Syria will not abandon its goal of becoming a unified whole.”

Military Mobilization and Strategic Fronts

Reports from Damascus indicate that the Syrian National Army is already on high alert. Former Defense Minister General Hasan Hammadi confirmed that mobilization has begun across several critical axes.

  • Primary Target Zones: Initial interventions are expected to focus on Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Aleppo, and Deir Hafir.

  • Securing the South: The military has also increased its presence along the Suwayda and Latakia-Tartus corridors to prevent any opportunistic insurgencies while the army is occupied in the north.

The SDF’s “Last Stand” Diplomacy

In response to the growing threat of war, SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi stated that “all efforts” are being made to save the integration deal. Abdi claims the SDF remains committed to the March agreement but argues that the text did not specify a “hard deadline” that would automatically trigger a return to conflict.

However, Damascus rejects this interpretation, labeling it as a propaganda move to gain time. Syrian officials insist that only “irreversible steps”—such as the immediate disbanding of independent Kurdish units into the national army—can prevent an offensive.

Geopolitical Pressure: Turkey and the U.S.

The tension is being closely monitored by regional powers:

  • Turkey: Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently met with President al-Sharaa in Damascus, warning that Turkey’s patience with the “terror elements” on its border is exhausted. Ankara is reportedly backing the Sharaa administration’s firm stance.

  • The United States: While the U.S. remains the SDF’s primary partner, Ambassador Tom Barak recently signaled a shift, stating that the SDF has “no place in the new order” as an independent entity, urging them to sit at the table with Damascus.
