Turkey: From Health Crisis to Political Turbulence

Turkey is yet to get over its Covid-19 pandemic, with daily cases rising as quarantines are lifted.  A second wave of infections and the subsequent loss of the entire tourist season, as well as the wipe-out of small service sector enterprises are looming large on the horizon. Yet, Presidnet Erdogan has turned his steely gaze to the opposition instead of healing the economy.  As new polls show opposition parties gaining ground on AKP and its partner MHP, Erdogan is redoubling the crack-down on the opposition through various means.  Turkey may witness a confidence crisis which would exacerbate the current economic stagnation, as the opposition respond to oppression by stiffening its resistance.
