Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said authorities have granted permission for seven separate investigations into Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş over the past seven years. The development comes amid rising political tensions, with opposition figures accusing the government of judicial pressure and calling for early elections.

Seven Investigation Permits in Seven Years

Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi announced that inspection reports had led to authorization for seven separate investigations into Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş during his tenure.

Çiftçi made the remarks during a meeting with Ankara representatives of major media outlets at the capital’s Vilayetler Evi.

Latest Probe Linked to Campaign Vehicle Allegations

The most recent development follows a decision by the Interior Ministry to allow an investigation into allegations that municipal vehicles were used during a 2023 political rally.

Yavaş has denied any wrongdoing, stating he has not engaged in corruption or misuse of public resources. He also emphasized that he has consistently referred allegations involving municipal officials to prosecutors for investigation.

Yavaş Points to Double Standards

Yavaş has previously criticized authorities for failing to act on complaints related to former Ankara mayor Melih Gökçek, including allegations tied to past zoning decisions and financial benefits.

He argued that despite court rulings requiring action, no meaningful investigation had been launched in those cases.

Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Elections

The issue has unfolded against a backdrop of escalating political tensions between the government and opposition.

Opposition leader Özgür Özel has warned of increasing pressure on opposition figures, including Yavaş, and has called for early elections or a by-election process.

Özel accused the government of undermining democratic institutions and argued that judicial actions against opposition municipalities amount to political interference.

Calls for By-Elections and Democratic Safeguards

Özel also pointed to vacant parliamentary seats, arguing that constitutional provisions require by-elections to be held.

He said failure to do so could raise questions about democratic legitimacy and representation.

Concerns Over Rule of Law and Political Climate

The opposition has raised broader concerns about judicial independence, arguing that legal processes are being used as political tools.

Özel warned that continued pressure on political actors could damage democratic competition, stating that “free and fair competition is impossible without justice and democracy.”

Broader Social and Economic Criticism

In his remarks, Özel also highlighted rising social challenges, including child poverty and inequality.

He said millions of children in Türkiye face economic hardship, with disparities in access to education, nutrition, and basic services becoming more pronounced.
