CHP on High Alert: Özgür Özel Issues “Active Resistance” Directive
Özgür Özel
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel has placed the main opposition party on high alert following predictions of an expansion of legal operations against municipal administrations. During an extraordinary Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting and a subsequent briefing with provincial heads, Özel signaled a period of “active resistance” against what he describes as judicial attacks on the will of the people.
“The Istanbul Model” of Resistance
The core of the CHP strategy relies on the precedent set during the repeat of the 2019 Istanbul local elections. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel told party officials that while he does not expect a “null and void” legal outcome that would permanently paralyze the party, he is fully prepared for extra-legal interventions, such as the appointment of trustees or the removal from office.
“We do not expect a total legal nullification, but if an illegality similar to the cancellation of the Istanbul elections occurs, we will show the exact same will we displayed then,” Özel reportedly stated. “We will remain at our posts. We will give our necks, but we will not bow our heads.”
A Nationwide “National Will” Campaign
Moving beyond a purely defensive stance, the CHP is launching a strategic communication offensive to frame these municipal operations as a threat to Turkish democracy as a whole. The roadmap includes:
-
Field Mobilization: A large cohort of CHP MPs will be deployed across Anatolia to explain municipal achievements and the obstacles placed in their way directly to citizens.
-
Shifting the Narrative: The party’s communication unit has been instructed to move away from a language of “victimization” and toward a language of “determination”.
-
Democracy Bloc: The MYK plans to lead a broader “Democracy Bloc” to protect the results of the 2024 local elections, positioning the party as the primary defender of the ballot box.
Party sources indicate that these moves are designed to pull the CHP out of a reactive position and into a proactive struggle for “national sovereignty.” As the MYK continues its technical and legal evaluations of ongoing investigations, the message to the rank and file is clear: prepare for a sustained political struggle that extends far beyond the courtroom.
