Mabel Matiz Trial: Prosecutor Demands Prison Sentence

Mabel Matiz

A high-profile legal battle involving renowned Turkish singer Fatih Karaca, professionally known as Mabel Matiz, reached a critical stage at the Istanbul 54th Criminal Court of First Instance. The artist faces “obscenity” charges stemming from the lyrics of his song Perperişan. During the third hearing held today, the prosecution formally requested that Karaca be sentenced, arguing that the track contains explicit descriptions and erotic metaphors that violate general morality.

Prosecution Claims Lyrics Describe Sexual Acts

The prosecutor’s opinion emphasized that the song utilizes “bodily and spiritual metaphors” to create erotic connotations. According to the prosecution, the lyrics provide descriptions of sexual intercourse that are easily understood by the public. A significant portion of the legal argument focuses on the accessibility of the content, noting that the song was published on platforms like YouTube without age restrictions, potentially exposing children to “harmful” material.

The Ministry of Family and Social Services’ legal team supported the demand for punishment, asserting that the breach of decency is clear.

“It is very evident that sexual associations are being made. There is a violation of modesty here. We believe the defendant must be punished for these allegations.”

Judicial Debate Over Artistic Expression and Morality

The indictment seeks a prison sentence ranging from six months to three years for the charge of “mediating the publication of obscene content.” The legal tension was palpable from the first hearing, where the judge reportedly asked Karaca if the song was “written for a man.” Karaca described the question as “heartbreaking,” arguing that such scrutiny would not be applied to artists in other genres and that music is universal.

The prosecutor cited a report from the Board for the Protection of Minors from Obscene Publications, which concluded that the song’s content damages the “best interests of the child.” The legal definition of obscenity in this case is being framed as an act that offends the public’s sense of shame and exploits sexual desires.

Defense Requests Additional Time for Rebuttal

Following the prosecutor’s demand for a conviction, Karaca’s legal representatives requested additional time to prepare their final defense against the merits of the case. The court granted the request, adjourning the trial until May 8. As the Mabel Matiz obscenity trial continues, it remains a focal point for discussions regarding artistic freedom, digital censorship, and the protection of youth in the modern media landscape.
