EU Lawmaker Condemns Probe Into CHP Leader Özgür Özel: “This Is Not Normal”

Özgür Özel

The criminal investigation launched against Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel by Turkish prosecutors has drawn sharp criticism from European lawmakers, most notably European Parliament member Sergey Lagodinsky, who denounced the move as an attack on democracy.

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office recently initiated an investigation into Özel on four charges, including:

  • Insulting the President

  • Openly inciting crime

  • Insulting and threatening public officials due to their duties

The investigation was triggered by statements Özel made during a press briefing after a CHP Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting.

Lagodinsky: “This Is Not Normal”

Reacting on social media, Lagodinsky, a German MEP from the Green Party, voiced strong support for Özel and Türkiye’s democratic opposition:

End the pressure on CHP! Now a criminal investigation against Özgür Özel—this is not normal.

Referring to his recent meeting with Özel just two weeks prior, Lagodinsky added:

He represents courage and leadership. We stand with him—and with all democratic forces in Türkiye.

European Concern Grows Over Political Prosecutions in Türkiye

Lagodinsky’s statement adds to the growing concern within EU circles over Türkiye’s handling of opposition figures, freedom of expression, and the rule of law. With CHP municipalities facing increasing legal pressure and Özel now personally targeted, the developments risk further straining Türkiye–EU relations.

The case is being closely watched by international observers, who warn that criminalizing political dissent could deepen Türkiye’s democratic backsliding and erode trust with Western allies.
