Akın Gürlek Strikes Back: 452 Million TL Allegations
Akın-Gürlek
The political arena in Turkey has reached a fever pitch as Justice Minister Akın Gürlek issued a fierce rebuttal to the asset disclosures made by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel. Labeling the claims as a “systematic defamation campaign,” Gürlek announced he is launching immediate legal action for moral damages against the opposition leader.
While Özel presented a detailed list of Akın Gürlek’s properties with specific market valuations, Gürlek maintains that his asset declarations are fully compliant with the law and that the documents presented by the CHP are “hallucinations” with no basis in official land registry records.
The “Small Radish” Dossier: Breaking Down Akın Gürlek’s 452 Million TL
During a press conference titled “The Small Radish” (a Turkish idiom implying bigger revelations are coming), Özgür Özel listed 12 active properties and 4 recently sold assets allegedly linked to the Minister. He argued that Akın Gürlek’s total real estate wealth—calculated at 452 million TL—is mathematically impossible to achieve on a state salary.
Akın Gürlek’s “Unearned Wealth” Calculation:
Özel noted that even if a Chief Prosecutor saved every penny of their salary for 19 years without buying a single loaf of bread, their total earnings would still be only approximately 45 million TL.
“He has acquired real estate that 10 judges and prosecutors combined could not afford in 19 years of work,” Özel stated.
Akın Gürlek’s Alleged Asset Portfolio Highlights:
| Location | Property Type | Estimated Value |
| Kartal, Istanbul | 2 Apartments (Avrupa Konutları) | 52.5 Million TL |
| Beykoz, Istanbul | Forest Villa with Pool | 85 Million TL |
| Çankaya, Ankara | High-value Apartment | 35.5 Million TL |
| Beytepe, Ankara | 3 Separate Apartments | 66 Million TL (Total) |
| Konak, Izmir | 2 Luxury Apartments | 54 Million TL (Total) |
| Gelibolu, Çanakkale | “Priceless” Sea-view Land | 7.5 Million TL |
Özel also alleged that a 95 million TL apartment purchase in Etiler was abruptly halted by the Minister’s circle once the CHP began investigating the pre-sale records at Emlak Konut.
Akın Gürlek’s Defense: “Targeted for Fighting Terror”
Minister Gürlek’s response was swift and focused on his professional record. He dismissed the ID numbers and property lists provided by Özel as “papers thrust into his hands” by unknown actors intended to mislead the public.
-
Algı Operasyonu (Perception Management): Gürlek described the move as a strategic “perception operation” aimed at overshadowing his work in the judiciary.
-
The “Martyr” Narrative: He suggested that he is being targeted specifically because of his role in high-profile cases involving terrorism and organized crime.
-
Legal Challenge: “If there is concrete evidence, the platform is the courthouse, not political stages,” Gürlek stated, challenging the opposition to move the case to the prosecutor’s office.
The Sale of Assets: A Dash for Cash?
A key part of Özel’s allegation concerns four properties that were supposedly sold recently as the “assets debate” heated up. According to the CHP leader, these sales generated 126.5 million TL in liquid cash:
-
Halkalı, Istanbul: 43.5 Million TL
-
Üsküdar, Istanbul: 47.5 Million TL
-
Beytepe, Ankara: 27.75 Million TL
-
Çınar, Istanbul: 7.75 Million TL
What’s Next for Akın Gürlek?
The standoff now moves from the press room to the courtroom. With Minister Gürlek filing for moral damages, the burden of proof will shift. If Özel can verify the “ID numbers” and “Emlak Konut pre-sale records” he cited, it could trigger one of the most significant judicial investigations in recent Turkish history. If not, the Minister may succeed in framing this as a purely political attack.
