The decision to deploy the Patriot system follows two high-stakes aerial engagements within a single week. On March 4, a ballistic missile entering Turkish airspace near Hatay was neutralized by NATO assets. This was followed by a second incident on March 9, where another projectile was intercepted over Gaziantep.

The MSB’s official statement emphasizes a unified defense posture:

“In addition to the measures taken at the national level, NATO’s air and missile defense measures have been increased. Within this scope, a Patriot system assigned to support the protection of our airspace is being stationed in Malatya.”

Diplomatic Crisis: Iran Denies Intentional Targeting

The military buildup is mirrored by intense diplomatic friction. Following the Gaziantep intercept, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian Ambassador to Ankara to demand an immediate explanation for the repeated violations.

Despite the physical evidence, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly communicated with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, asserting that the missiles were not Iranian and that Tehran seeks no conflict with Ankara.
