Türkiye Reaches 22 Million Natural Gas Subscribers as Expansion Hits All 81 Provinces
Alparslan Bayraktar
Türkiye had achieved a significant energy milestone. The number of natural gas subscribers has risen from 1.3 million in 2002 to 22 million in 2025, according to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.
From 5 Provinces to Nationwide Access
In a written statement, Bayraktar recalled President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2002 vision of bringing natural gas to every province in Türkiye — a goal that is now fully realized. “Back in 2002, only 5 provinces and 57 settlements had access to natural gas. Today, we’ve reached 81 provinces, 950 settlements, and 229 organized industrial zones (OSBs) through a 243,000-kilometer transmission and distribution network,” Bayraktar said.
The expansion represents one of Türkiye’s most considerable infrastructure achievements in the past two decades, integrating clean and efficient energy access into nearly every region.
2025: Record Year for Network Growth
Bayraktar noted that Türkiye constructed 15,600 kilometers of new natural gas pipelines in 2025 alone, extending the supply to 51 new settlements. As a result, household subscriptions increased by nearly 1 million within a single year.
Currently, 85% of Türkiye’s population has access to natural gas, and by the end of 2025, that figure is expected to rise further as supply reaches 973 settlements.
Clean Energy and Environmental Benefits
Beyond energy accessibility, Bayraktar emphasized that Türkiye’s gas transformation has significantly improved urban air quality and reduced emissions. “Natural gas provides citizens not only with an energy source but also with modern comfort and cleaner air,” he said.
According to ministry data, Türkiye’s shift to natural gas prevents 34 million tons of carbon emissions annually and eliminates sulfur-based pollution — a key step toward the country’s climate goals.
Boosting Domestic Gas Use
Bayraktar also highlighted progress in the use of domestically produced natural gas. “Today, around 4 million households are already using our own gas,” he said. “By 2028, we aim to increase that number fourfold, enabling 16 million households to benefit from Türkiye’s local resources.”
The minister reiterated that developing local gas production remains a strategic economic priority, contributing to energy security, reducing imports, and promoting sustainable growth.
A Cornerstone of Türkiye’s Energy Vision
With its vast pipeline network and increasing domestic supply, Türkiye is positioning itself as both a regional energy hub and a model for sustainable energy access.
“Bringing natural gas to every corner of our country has been one of the defining achievements of the last two decades,” Bayraktar stated. “Now we are moving toward the next phase — making Türkiye’s own gas a part of every home.”
