Türkiye’s defense industry had a transformative year in 2024, marked by record exports, innovative advancements, and strengthened global partnerships, according to Haluk Görgün, head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). Speaking in Ankara, Görgün highlighted significant achievements, including exceeding export targets and bolstering domestic production capabilities.
Record-Breaking Exports
Türkiye exported defense products to 185 countries in 2024, generating over $7 billion in export revenue—an impressive 29% increase from 2023 and surpassing the $6.5 billion target. Görgün expressed optimism for the future, stating, “We expect to join the ranks of nations with double-digit billion-dollar defense exports within two years.”
European countries played a pivotal role, with five of the top 10 export destinations located in Europe. Notably, Türkiye established significant cooperation with Portugal, exporting military logistics ships to a nation renowned for its maritime expertise.
NATO and International Collaboration
In 2024, Türkiye made the highest number of project applications to NATO, reflecting an increased focus on alliance partnerships. Görgün announced plans for further collaboration in 2025, supported by upcoming meetings with NATO officials and representatives from various nations.
Advancing R&D and Localization
Türkiye’s defense industry continues to invest heavily in research and development, with a budget nearing $3 billion. The localization rate of defense projects surpassed 80%, while the total project volume exceeded $100 billion.
“Our research institutes are working intensively with universities and companies to develop technologies that will shape the operational environment of the future,” Görgün stated.
Key Achievements
- Air Defense Systems: Türkiye exported long-range air defense systems for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s defense capabilities.
- Aselsan’s Global Reach: Defense giant Aselsan secured an international contract to export avionics for civilian training aircraft, further solidifying Türkiye’s reputation as a global defense exporter.
- Mass Production: Nearly 90 projects were approved in 2024, focusing on technological development and strengthening mass production infrastructure.
Transforming Domestic Capabilities
Over the past two decades, Türkiye has transitioned from reliance on imported defense equipment to meeting almost all of its needs with homegrown systems. Investments in air, land, and marine platforms have not only bolstered domestic security but also driven significant export growth, positioning Türkiye as a major player in the global defense industry.
