Türkiye Offers Support in Resolving Rwanda-DRC Conflict

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced Türkiye’s readiness to mediate in resolving the ongoing dispute between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), provided both nations express interest. Speaking alongside Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Ankara, Erdoğan emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in Africa.

“We, as Türkiye, are ready to provide any support necessary to resolve this issue, which will contribute to stability and peace in the Great Lakes Region, should both parties wish for it,” Erdoğan stated during a joint press conference.

Supporting African-Led Solutions

Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s “African solutions to African problems” principle, emphasizing collaboration based on equal partnership and mutual benefit. He praised Rwanda’s efforts in fostering stability in East Africa and the Great Lakes region and extended Türkiye’s “sincere support” for direct negotiations mediated by Angola.

Strengthening Türkiye-Rwanda Relations

The meeting marked a milestone in Türkiye-Rwanda relations, with Erdoğan highlighting the nations’ growing ties since establishing embassies in 2013 and 2014. Bilateral investments have reached $500 million, and Erdoğan expressed optimism about expanding economic collaboration.

Rwandan President Kagame praised Türkiye’s infrastructure investments in Rwanda and encouraged increased involvement of Turkish companies in the nation’s development. “Rwanda remains open to welcoming even more Turkish companies. There is certainly a lot we can do together and learn from one another,” Kagame said.

Türkiye’s Mediation and Global Contributions

Kagame commended Türkiye’s successful mediation in other regional conflicts, including its role in the Somalia-Ethiopia agreement signed in Ankara last December. He suggested that Türkiye’s diplomatic expertise could also be beneficial in addressing the tensions in the Great Lakes region.

The Rwandan president acknowledged Türkiye’s recovery efforts following the devastating 2023 earthquakes, calling them an inspiring example of resilience. He also conveyed his condolences over the recent ski resort fire tragedy in Bolu province, which claimed at least 78 lives.

This visit signifies the deepening partnership between Türkiye and Rwanda, with both nations committed to exploring new avenues for cooperation and contributing to regional and global peace initiatives.
