Türkiye has “strongly” condemned a deadly attack by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a Saudi hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur, emphasizing the need to uphold international law and protect civilian infrastructure.
In a statement shared on X, the Turkish Foreign Ministry extended condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Sudan. The ministry reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting efforts to restore peace and stability in the war-torn nation.
The attack, described as a drone strike, claimed over 70 lives, according to North Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi. The Saudi Foreign Ministry labeled the assault as a “violation of international and humanitarian law” and reiterated the kingdom’s firm stance against such breaches.
Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
The violent conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis:
- Casualties: Over 20,000 lives lost, according to U.N. estimates. A U.S. university study suggests the toll may be as high as 130,000.
- Displacement: Around 14 million people have been displaced, with the conflict spreading to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
- Humanitarian Crisis: International organizations warn of a worsening catastrophe, with millions facing famine and death due to severe food shortages.
The conflict has placed immense strain on Sudan’s infrastructure and civilian population, pushing the country deeper into chaos.
Türkiye’s Position
Türkiye has repeatedly voiced support for peace initiatives in Sudan, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians and respecting international law during armed conflicts. The Turkish government’s strong condemnation aligns with global calls for an end to hostilities and the prevention of further humanitarian suffering in Sudan.
As fighting persists, the international community continues to push for diplomatic solutions to halt the violence and provide relief to millions affected by the ongoing crisis.
