Turkish automotive production and exports fell in the first two months of 2022

According to the January-February data of the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), total automotive production decreased by 12 percent compared to the same period of previous year to 196,194 units, while automobile production decreased by 20 percent to 109,322 units. Including tractors, the total production reached 204,072 units.

Looking at the monthly data, the production of the automotive industry in February decreased by 9 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, and became 105,644 units, while automobile production decreased by 9.6 percent to 61,544 units. In January-February period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 61 percent. Capacity utilization rates based on vehicle groups were 61 percent in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 66 percent in the truck group, 20 percent in the bus-midibus group, and 63 percent in the tractor.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE PRODUCTION INCREASED BY 2 PERCENT

In January-February period, commercial vehicle production increased by 2 percent compared to the same period of previous year. During this period, while the production in the heavy commercial vehicle group increased by 4 percent, the production in the light commercial vehicle group increased by 2 percent. Furthermore, the production of commercial vehicles carrying cargo and passengers reached 86,842 units, and the production of tractors was 7908 units. Overall, the commercial vehicle market decreased by 5 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 5 percent and the heavy commercial vehicle market by 8 percent in the January-February period compared to the same period of 2021.

DOMESTIC VEHICLE SHARE IN THE LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET BECAME 64 PERCENT

In the January-February period, the total market decreased by 14 percent compared to 2021 and amounted to 91,839 units. During the subject period, automobile market decreased by 17 percent by only reaching 66,661 units. Comparing with the averages of the past decade, total market increased by 12 percent, the automobile market by 14 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 10 percent and the heavy commercial vehicle market by 4 percent during the January-February period.
In this period, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 37 percent, while the domestic share in the light commercial vehicle market was 64 percent.

EXPORTS DECREASED 11 PERCENT IN JANUARY-FEBRUARY

In the period covering the first two months of 2022, Turkish automotive exports decreased by 11 percent on unit basis compared to the same period of 2021, with only 146,627 units. Automobile exports, on the other hand, decreased by 13 percent to 85,682 units. However, tractor exports increased by 35 percent with a total of 3112 units. According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), automotive industry exports maintained its first place with a 13 percent share in total exports during January-February period.

TOTAL EXPORTS REACHED 4.8 BILLION DOLLARS

In the January-February period of 2022, total automotive exports decreased by nearly 1 percent in dollar terms (increased by 6 percent in euro). During the period, total automotive exports amounted to 4.8 billion dollars, while automobile exports decreased by 14 percent to 1.4 billion dollars. In Euro terms, automobile exports decreased by 7 percent to 1.3 billion Euros. In the January-February period, exports of the main industry decreased by 7 percent in dollar terms, while exports of the supply industry increased by 10 percent.
