Turkey bars supermarkets from selling goods other than “basic needs”

Turkey’s government barred supermarkets from selling some goods to customers after it tightened a lockdown on the population last week.

The businesses will not be able to sell items including perfume, makeup and garden products from May 7, according to a circular issued by the Interior Ministry. The sales ban also includes stationary, clothing and accessories, toys and electronics.

Turkey is seeking to curb daily cases of COVID-19, which reached a record of more than 60,000 in April. New infections have since declined to less than 25,000 per day, according to official data.

The government faced a storm of criticism on social media last week after it barred supermarkets and other shops from selling alcohol during the tightened lockdown, which is due to end on May 17.
