Murat Gezici, President of Gezici Research, shared insights from the latest election survey during a live broadcast, sparking fresh discussions about Turkey’s political landscape. Highlighting the dominance of the People’s Alliance, Gezici remarked, “If I were in the government’s place, I would hold an election tomorrow.”
Party Vote Rates in the Survey
According to Gezici, the current vote rates reflect a strong lead for the People’s Alliance:
- AKP (Justice and Development Party): 36.5%
- CHP (Republican People’s Party): 29.5%
- MHP (Nationalist Movement Party): 11.5%
- DEM Party: 9%
Gezici emphasized the strength of the People’s Alliance, stating that when including smaller allied parties like BBP (Great Unity Party) and HÜDAPAR (Free Cause Party), the alliance’s total vote rate surpasses 50%.
Election Timing and Government Strategy
Despite the favorable survey results, Gezici believes the government is strategically delaying elections. He stated, “The AK Party wants to hold elections at a time of its choosing. President Erdoğan likely has a medium- to long-term strategy aimed at securing a larger vote share.”
Gezici predicted that early elections might not occur before 2027, asserting that Erdoğan’s government enjoys robust public support for its policies, particularly on Syria and counter-terrorism.
Public Opinion on Key Issues
Gezici also discussed the impact of ongoing talks involving Abdullah Öcalan, initiated by MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, on public sentiment:
- Disarmament of PKK: An overwhelming 87.5% of respondents expect Öcalan to call for unconditional disarmament.
- Kurdish Voters’ Views: Nearly 80% of Kurdish voters reportedly support such a statement from Öcalan.
- Turkey’s Counter-Terrorism Strategy: Gezici highlighted that Erdoğan and Bahçeli’s joint efforts have been well-received, framing Turkey as a nation with a “grand strategy.”
Public Sentiment on Syria
According to Gezici, Erdoğan is perceived as a “liberator” in the context of Syria, a sentiment that contrasts with the opposition’s cautious stance. He argued that the opposition’s reluctance to support Erdoğan’s approach to Syria has diminished its credibility among voters.
