Why: Because the alternative passageway, Bosporus Straits is overcrowded and too narrow.
Why is the massive resistance to the project: It devastates the environment, as well as diverting much needed funds from the poor to pet projects.
Can it be constructed? No, because it is not economically feasible.
What if it is constructed? It can bankrupt the Treasury.
