Treasury Denies Claims of Tension Between Minister Şimşek and Industrialists

Türkiye’s Treasury and Finance Ministry has rejected media reports alleging that Minister Mehmet Şimşek harshly criticized industrialists during a closed-door meeting at the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO), calling the claims “a smear campaign” and insisting the discussions were constructive and cordial.

Ministry Rejects “Harsh Remarks” Allegations

Türkiye’s Treasury and Finance Ministry has strongly denied claims that Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek reprimanded industrialists during a recent meeting with members of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO).

The allegations, widely circulated in domestic media, suggested that Şimşek accused business leaders of discouraging foreign investors through persistently negative public statements.

In an official statement released on April 2, 2026, the Ministry dismissed the report as “entirely baseless” and described it as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the meeting.

Controversy Triggered by Newspaper Report

The controversy emerged after Nefes newspaper published a front-page story claiming that Şimşek had sharply criticized industrialists during a closed-door consultation hosted by the ISO.

According to the report, the minister allegedly told business representatives:
“You are constantly making negative statements. These remarks are driving away foreign investors.”

The claims quickly gained traction, sparking debate across political and economic circles.

Ministry: “Not Journalism, but a Smear Campaign”

Responding to the allegations, the Ministry issued a strongly worded rebuttal via its official website and social media channels.

The statement criticized the report’s lack of sourcing and verification, emphasizing that no effort had been made to confirm the claims with official authorities.

“This is not journalism; it is entirely a smear campaign,” the Ministry said, accusing the publication of attempting to create a negative public perception using unverified assertions.

Officials also stressed that reporting based on vague phrases such as “it is claimed” without credible sources constitutes a deliberate attempt at manipulation.

“Meeting Was Constructive and Positive”

Providing its own account of the meeting, the Ministry stated that the gathering followed a structured format, beginning with a presentation and continuing with open discussions.

Contrary to the allegations, officials described the atmosphere as “sincere, constructive, and positive,” highlighting that the exchange of views between Şimşek and industrialists was productive.

“The discussions were held in a cordial and constructive environment,” the statement said, urging the public not to rely on reports that distort the context of such meetings.

Broader Context: Economic Messaging and Investor Sentiment

The episode underscores the sensitivity surrounding economic communication in Türkiye, particularly at a time when policymakers are focused on restoring investor confidence and stabilizing macroeconomic conditions.

Minister Şimşek, widely seen as a key figure in Türkiye’s economic normalization efforts, has consistently emphasized the importance of credibility, transparency, and disciplined messaging in attracting foreign capital.

Disputes over how interactions between government officials and the business community are portrayed highlight the broader tension between media narratives and official economic policy messaging.
