SHOCKING CLAIM: Unproven Claims Link Türkiye to F-15 Downing as Ankara Cries Disinformation

Social media claims alleging that Türkiye supplied the weapon used to shoot down a U.S. F-15 fighter jet over Iran remain unverified, with no confirmation from U.S. officials. Ankara has strongly denied the accusations, calling them part of a coordinated disinformation campaign, while continuing to position itself as a neutral mediator in the escalating regional conflict.

Social Media Allegations Stir NATO Tensions

Unverified claims circulating on social media have suggested that Türkiye may have supplied Iran with a shoulder-fired air defense system used to down a U.S. F-15 fighter jet. The allegations, citing purported smuggling of Turkish-made MANPADS, quickly triggered heated online debate over NATO cohesion and Türkiye’s regional role.

However, no U.S. officials have confirmed such claims, and no credible evidence has emerged linking Ankara to the incident. Analysts note that the accusations remain speculative as investigations into the downing continue.

Ankara Denies Claims, Labels Them “Psychological Warfare”

Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications’ Center for Combating Disinformation issued a firm denial, rejecting allegations that Turkish defense systems were used in the incident or that Ankara is supplying Iran with advanced anti-aircraft or UAV missiles.

In an official statement, the center described the claims as:

  • “Baseless allegations”
  • “Deliberate psychological warfare”
  • “Black propaganda targeting Türkiye’s diplomatic role”

The statement emphasized that such narratives aim to undermine Türkiye’s peace-oriented diplomacy and mislead international public opinion.

Authorities urged caution against relying on non-official sources, warning that misinformation could further destabilize an already fragile regional environment.

Türkiye Maintains Neutral Stance in Expanding Conflict

Despite its ties with both the United States and Iran, Türkiye has so far maintained a neutral position in the conflict, opting instead to pursue mediation efforts.

Diplomatic initiatives include:

  • Participation in regional talks hosted by Pakistan alongside Egypt and Saudi Arabia
  • Efforts to address maritime security, including proposals to reopen the Strait of Hormuz
  • Intensive phone diplomacy led by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan with regional and global counterparts

Ankara has framed its approach as “peace diplomacy,” aiming to engage all parties without becoming directly involved in military operations.

War Escalation Continues with Conflicting Claims

The controversy comes amid escalating military developments. Iranian authorities have claimed responsibility for downing multiple U.S. aircraft involved in rescue operations following the initial F-15 incident.

Iran’s military stated that:

  • Two Black Hawk helicopters and one C-130 aircraft were hit during operations
  • The rescue mission “failed”
  • Several casualties occurred during strikes in southwestern Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump later announced that a missing crew member had been safely recovered, contradicting some Iranian claims.

Independent verification of battlefield developments remains limited.

Türkiye Faces Spillover Risks

Türkiye has also experienced direct spillover from the conflict. Turkish authorities confirmed that a ballistic missile was intercepted by a NATO defense system within its territory on March 30, marking the fourth such incident since hostilities began.

Iran has denied responsibility for the missile launches, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of “false-flag operations” aimed at undermining regional relations in a recent call with his Turkish counterpart.

A Battle Beyond the Battlefield

The episode underscores a parallel information war unfolding alongside the military conflict. As geopolitical tensions intensify, disinformation campaigns and competing narratives are increasingly shaping perceptions of regional actors.

For Türkiye, the challenge lies in maintaining its diplomatic positioning while countering claims that risk pulling it deeper into the conflict.
