Mapping Everyday Language in Türkiye: Study Reveals Most and Least Profane Cities

küfür

A new nationwide study examining everyday speech patterns across Türkiye has identified the cities where profanity is most—and least—commonly used. Based on responses from 15,000 participants, the research offers a snapshot of linguistic habits and regional differences in communication styles.

Study highlights regional language differences

The research, conducted by Prof. Dr. Behçet Yalın Özkara, analyzed how frequently residents in different cities use profanity in daily conversations.

The findings, published on April 10, 2026, by Akademiklink, provide a “language map” of Türkiye, revealing notable contrasts between regions in terms of tone and expression.

Participants were ranked based on how often they reported using profane language in everyday interactions.

Top three cities with highest profanity usage

According to the study, the cities where profanity is most frequently used are:

  1. Edirne – Ranked as the city with the highest frequency of profanity in daily speech
  2. Uşak – Placed second, showing similarly high usage patterns
  3. Muğla – Came in third, standing out among coastal regions

The results suggest that informal and expressive communication styles may be more prevalent in these areas.

Cities with the most polite language

At the other end of the spectrum, the study identified cities where residents tend to use more polite and restrained language. These locations were described as the most “gentle” in terms of everyday speech:

  1. Siirt – Ranked as the least profane city in Türkiye
  2. Rize – Second place in politeness and restrained expression
  3. Çanakkale – Third among cities with the lowest profanity usage

These findings indicate stronger tendencies toward courteous communication in certain regions.
