Iran Denies Nakhchivan Strike as Azerbaijan Demands Apology

Azerbaijan-drone-attack

The South Caucasus has become the latest front in the rapidly expanding regional conflict. Following a drone strike that hit the Nakhchivan International Airport and a village school, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has demanded a formal apology from Tehran, characterizing the event as a “cowardly terrorist act.”

While Baku insists the drones originated from Iranian territory, Tehran has issued a flat denial, suggesting the incident may be a “false flag” orchestrated by Israel to damage Iran’s relations with its neighbors.

The Attack: Terminal and School Targeted

The strike occurred around noon on Thursday, involving at least two loitering munitions:

  • Airport Impact: One drone struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan’s airport, causing structural damage and injuring two civilians.

  • School Zone: A second drone fell near a school in Shakarabad. No children were harmed, but the proximity to a civilian center has fueled Azerbaijani outrage.

  • Iranian Denial: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, that Iran only targets “enemy military bases” (US and Israel) and suggested the Nakhchivan strike was designed to “undermine Iran’s good relations.”

Geopolitical Undercurrents: The “Zangezur” Factor

The conflict in Nakhchivan is deeply tied to the Zangezur Corridor (also known as the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity”).

  • U.S. Interests: The corridor, brokered by the U.S. last year, gives Washington development rights for a transit route connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan.

  • Iran’s Fear: Tehran has long opposed this route, fearing it would sever its direct border with Armenia and allow “hostile foreign forces” into the Caucasus.

  • Espionage Accusations: Tehran continues to accuse President Aliyev of turning Azerbaijan into an “Israeli spy base,” an allegation Aliyev has consistently denied.

A Multi-Front War: Regional Tensions Surge

The strike on Nakhchivan is part of a day of unprecedented Iranian drone and missile activity across the Middle East:

Location Incident Outcome
Nakhchivan (AZ) 2 Kamikaze Drones Terminal hit, 2 civilians injured.
Doha (Qatar) 13 Missiles & 4 Drones Intercepted by Qatar Air Defense.
Al-Jawf (Saudi) Drone Incursion Shot down by Saudi Ministry of Defence.
Baghdad (Iraq) US Base Attack Iranian drones targeted airport-adjacent base.
Turkiye Ballistic Missile Intercepted by NATO over Mediterranean.

Ankara Stays Vigilant

President Erdoğan reaffirmed Turkiye’s “unwavering support” for Azerbaijan, warning against any attempt to draw third countries into the war. Turkiye is currently coordinating with NATO to prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s ballistic missile attempt on Turkish airspace, with the President stating that Ankara is “taking all necessary precautions” to secure its borders.

As Russia reportedly benefits from the oil price volatility caused by these Gulf and Caucasian conflicts, the global community is watching the “Turkish Gate” (Nakhchivan) to see if this strike triggers a direct military response from Baku.
