Diyarbakır Nevroz Signals Political Reset as Öcalan Demand Takes Center Stage

nevruz diyarbakir

Mass turnout at the 2026 Nevroz celebrations in Diyarbakır underscored a renewed political messaging around Abdullah Öcalan’s status and broader Kurdish political restructuring. Speeches, symbols, and participation trends pointed to a shift toward legal recognition, integration, and a possible reconfiguration of Kurdish politics in Türkiye.

Massive turnout reflects political momentum

Tens of thousands gathered in Diyarbakır for this year’s Nevroz celebrations, with crowds entering the rally grounds later in the day compared to previous years.

The event offered a clear snapshot of the evolving political process that began in October 2024 under the visible leadership of MHP head Devlet Bahçeli, now taking more concrete shape on the ground.

Security checks at entry points were largely smooth, though journalists faced brief delays, reportedly due to ongoing coordination.

“Freedom for Öcalan” dominates messaging

The central theme of the gathering was unmistakable: calls for the legal recognition of Abdullah Öcalan’s status and improved conditions.

DEM Party co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan emphasized this demand directly, stating that “the path should now be opened” for Öcalan to meet the public in Diyarbakır.

The widespread presence of Öcalan posters and flags reinforced that this issue has become the core political demand of the current process.

A carefully staged political narrative

The event’s organization appeared highly deliberate, from who delivered Öcalan’s message to who addressed criticisms of the ongoing process.

Öcalan’s message itself was interpreted as inward-looking, aimed primarily at Kurdish society. One key concept that stood out was “presentification,” which some observers interpreted as a call for Kurds to seek legal recognition and political participation within the states they live in.

His remarks about “cleansing inadequate relationships and meanings” were widely seen as signaling a potential restructuring phase within Kurdish politics.

Debate over integration and legal framework

DEM Party MP Cengiz Çandar framed Öcalan’s message as part of a broader transition:

  • A move away from nationalism
  • A call for integration into Türkiye
  • A focus on legal recognition of Kurdish identity

Çandar also highlighted a critical gap: while disarmament and reintegration are central to the process, the legal framework enabling participation of militants, diaspora members, and prisoners in democratic life remains unclear.

Strong rhetoric on political accountability

Çetin Arkaş, who spent years imprisoned and had direct contact with Öcalan, delivered one of the most impactful speeches.

He warned against individuals seeking personal gain from the movement’s legacy, stating that such attempts would be firmly resisted.

His remarks also addressed speculation about Öcalan, emphasizing continuity and resilience in the Kurdish political struggle.

Youth presence signals generational continuity

A striking feature of the rally was the strong presence of young participants, particularly those aged 17 to 20.

Their engagement with politically significant Kurdish music and symbols suggested that core political narratives are being transmitted across generations.

Former HDP leader Selahattin Demirtaş remained a prominent symbolic figure, with his images widely displayed by younger attendees.

Broad political messaging and alliances

The event also reflected broader political dynamics:

  • CHP leader Özgür Özel sent a message criticizing government policies and warning against political polarization
  • DEVA Party leader Ali Babacan and regional Kurdish leaders, including Nechirvan Barzani and Bafel Talabani, also sent messages
  • International participation was present but more limited than in previous years

The exchange of messages between opposition actors suggested ongoing dialogue across political lines.

Despite concerns, turnout remained strong

Concerns that uncertainty around the political process might dampen participation proved unfounded.

Despite rainy weather, attendance remained high, and traditional celebrations continued throughout the day.
