DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan called for 2026 to mark a turning point for democratic rights in Türkiye, urging the adoption of a “special law” and broader reforms recognizing Kurdish identity and freedoms. Speaking at a Nevruz reception in Diyarbakır, Bakırhan emphasized hopes for a future free of conflict, state-appointed trustees, and restrictions on cultural expression. CHP’s Sezgin Tanrıkulu echoed calls for unity, framing Nevruz as a symbol of resistance and shared heritage across the region.
Bakırhan: 2026 Must Be a Turning Point for Democratic Rights
Tuncer Bakırhan, co-chair of the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, called for sweeping democratic reforms in Türkiye, expressing hope that 2026 would become a milestone year for institutionalizing rights and freedoms.
“Hopefully, Nevruz 2026 will be remembered as the year when democratic steps were taken and a special law was enacted,” Bakırhan said.
He stressed that future reforms should include formal recognition of Kurdish language and identity, an end to the appointment of state trustees to municipalities, and the ability to celebrate cultural and religious holidays freely.
Diyarbakır Hosts Nevruz Reception with Broad Political Participation
The remarks came during a Nevruz reception organized by the Diyarbakır Urban Protection and Solidarity Platform at the Metropolitan Municipality’s Fiskaya Social Facilities.
The event drew a wide range of participants, including politicians from multiple parties, civil society representatives, journalists, and international guests. Among attendees were Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Chair Keskin Bayındır and CHP Deputy Chair Sezgin Tanrıkulu.
“Nevruz Without Police Intervention Is Possible”
Bakırhan highlighted the contrast between this year’s celebrations and those of previous years, noting the absence of heavy police presence.
“For years, we held these events under the shadow of batons, water cannons, and police announcements. Tonight, we realized that Nevruz can be celebrated without them,” he said.
He also paid tribute to individuals who lost their lives in past clashes surrounding Nevruz celebrations, stating that their sacrifices paved the way for today’s more peaceful environment.
“They gave their lives for a democratic and egalitarian Türkiye. We must prove worthy of their struggle,” he added.
From Armed Conflict to Democratic Expectations
Bakırhan described Nevruz 2025 as a symbolic moment when “weapons fell silent,” expressing hope that 2026 would go further by delivering tangible democratic progress.
He outlined expectations for the coming year, including:
- Legal reforms recognizing Kurdish rights
- The abolition of trustee appointments
- Expanded cultural freedoms
- A durable environment of peace
Tanrıkulu: Nevruz as a Symbol of Resistance and Unity
CHP Deputy Chair Sezgin Tanrıkulu also addressed the gathering, emphasizing Nevruz’s historical and cultural significance across the Middle East and Caucasus.
“Nevruz is the shared festival of the peoples of the Middle East and the Caucasus. It marks the arrival of spring, but also symbolizes freedom and resistance against oppression,” he said.
Referring to Kurdish mythology, Tanrıkulu highlighted the story of Kawa the Blacksmith’s rebellion against the tyrant Dehak as a foundational narrative of resistance.
“We Are at a Critical Juncture”
Tanrıkulu underscored that Türkiye is entering a critical political phase, with Nevruz increasingly celebrated in a relatively peaceful environment compared to past years.
“We are at the threshold of an important process. We hope Nevruz becomes a shared celebration for all citizens of Türkiye—one that reflects diverse identities, beliefs, and cultures,” he said.
He added that Nevruz should evolve from a symbol of division into a day of unity and coexistence.
Calls for Democracy, Justice, and Peace
Drawing parallels between historical and modern struggles, Tanrıkulu argued that oppression persists in new forms.
“Oppression did not end with Dehak—it only changed form. Today, we continue the struggle against modern forms of tyranny. We will ultimately succeed in bringing democracy, justice, and peace to Türkiye,” he said.
Celebrations Conclude with Traditional Rituals
Following the speeches, participants lit the traditional Nevruz fire using torches and gathered around it, performing halay dances—a customary conclusion to the celebrations.
