Claims Emerge of Pressure Campaign Against CHP as Legal Cases Intensify

by Deniz Zeyrek, NEFES

A series of legal developments targeting opposition figures has fueled claims that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government may be seeking to weaken or even dismantle the main opposition CHP. While no formal move has been announced, escalating investigations, arrests and political rhetoric are raising concerns about mounting pressure on the party leadership.  NEFES columnist and Ankara insider Deniz Zeyrek claims soon a filing to shut down the party at the Constitutional Court may be made.

Pressure Builds Around CHP Figures

Recent developments surrounding Antalya Mayor Muhittin Böcek have intensified political tensions.

Comments made by Justice Minister Akın Gürlek suggesting Böcek could eventually turn state witness triggered strong reactions from both Böcek and CHP leader Özgür Özel.

Both figures have claimed that Böcek is under significant pressure to cooperate with authorities, while Böcek’s camp has denied any such intention.

Expanding Investigations Raise Questions

The situation escalated further when Istanbul prosecutors launched parallel actions:

  • Two of Böcek’s drivers were detained and later arrested
  • Additional individuals, including a municipal employee and an adviser, were also taken into custody

These moves have raised questions about why authorities in Istanbul became involved in a case already being handled in Antalya.

At the same time, renewed rumors that Böcek might become a cooperating witness have circulated widely.

Allegations of Political Pressure

Senior CHP figures claim that the legal actions are part of a broader effort to pressure the party.

According to opposition sources:

  • Böcek is being “squeezed from all sides”
  • Pressure could extend into his private life
  • The aim is to force testimony that could implicate party leadership

One party official suggested that both Böcek and other figures are being used to exert pressure on CHP leadership and silence criticism.

Potential Legal Risks for the Party

The stakes could rise significantly if testimony were to link senior CHP figures to alleged wrongdoing.

Justice Minister Gürlek had previously suggested that Böcek met Özel and provided bribes related to political candidacy—claims that, if supported by testimony, could feed into ongoing legal scrutiny of the party.

Such developments could shift the focus of investigations:

  • From individual municipalities
  • To the institutional structure of CHP itself

This could potentially open the door to broader legal action targeting the party.

Another Front: The Yalım Investigation

A separate investigation involving another CHP-linked figure, Yalım, is also being closely watched.

Party insiders say:

  • Direct links between alleged corruption and party headquarters are unclear
  • However, Yalım’s proximity to Özel could be used politically

Reports suggest that individuals close to Yalım have provided statements containing serious allegations, including claims related to both corruption and private conduct.

Within CHP, there are indications that party leadership is considering expulsion as a defensive measure.

Concerns Over Escalating Legal Pressure

CHP leadership believes that recent political statements and investigations are interconnected.

Officials point to growing concern that:

  • Legal actions against opposition figures could intensify
  • Court decisions and investigations may increasingly target party leadership

The timing of these developments has drawn particular attention, especially following public criticism by Özel directed at senior government figures.

Talk of More Drastic Measures

According to political sources, discussions within government circles may be expanding beyond individual cases.

Speculation includes:

  • Legal rulings that could weaken CHP’s institutional standing
  • Even the possibility of a closure case against the party

While such steps remain unconfirmed, the rhetoric has heightened political uncertainty.

CHP Signals Resistance, But Internal Risks Remain

CHP leader Özgür Özel has signaled that the party will resist mounting pressure.

However, party officials acknowledge that:

  • Internal vulnerabilities
  • Controversies involving certain figures

may complicate their position.

In particular, cases like the Yalım investigation are seen as creating additional risks beyond external political pressure.

Conclusion: Rising Political and Legal Tensions

Recent developments suggest a period of intensifying political and legal pressure in Turkey.

While no formal action has been taken against CHP as an institution, the combination of:

  • Expanding investigations
  • High-profile statements
  • Growing political rhetoric

is fueling speculation about broader objectives.

The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether these developments remain limited to individual cases or evolve into a wider challenge for Turkey’s main opposition party.
