CHP Warns of “Massive Irregular Migration Risk” as Middle East War Escalates

CHP Interior Policy Board Chair Murat Bakan has warned that escalating military conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel could trigger a new wave of irregular migration toward Türkiye. Calling border security the country’s most urgent issue, Bakan urged the government to act immediately and emphasized that any comprehensive border strategy must be coordinated with the Ministry of National Defense.
“A New Migration Wave May Be at the Door”
As tensions rise across the Middle East, concerns are mounting in Ankara over potential spillover effects.
Murat Bakan, a senior figure within the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), said the conflict could displace millions and place Türkiye at risk of a fresh influx of irregular migrants.
“The war between Iran, the U.S. and Israel may confront Türkiye with a new irregular migration wave. I call on all responsible institutions to act against this major risk,” Bakan said in a social media statement.
He described border security as “the most vital issue facing Türkiye today,” arguing that the government must prepare for a scenario involving uncontrolled population movements.

Jurisdiction Debate with Interior Minister
Bakan also raised concerns about a recent “Border Security Meeting” convened by newly appointed Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi.
While acknowledging that border security discussions are appropriate, Bakan argued that the institutional framework must reflect existing legal authority.
He pointed out that under Turkish law, the protection of land borders falls under the responsibility of the Turkish Armed Forces and the Land Forces Command — and therefore under the Ministry of National Defense.
According to Bakan:
-
The Interior Ministry is responsible for border gates, migration management, public order and domestic security measures once individuals cross into the country.
-
The military protection of physical border lines is not within the Interior Ministry’s direct mandate.
Call for Coordination with Defense Ministry
Bakan stressed that effective border protection cannot be handled solely through Interior Ministry meetings.
“If border security is truly to be discussed, then coordination with Defense Minister Yaşar Güler is essential. The right task must be carried out by the right authority, with full coordination,” he said.
He underlined that the so-called “border eagles” — a term used for military personnel guarding Türkiye’s land frontiers — operate under the Land Forces Command.
Bakan clarified that his remarks were not a criticism of holding security meetings, but rather a reminder of institutional roles.
“The issue is important. But it must be handled through the proper authority,” he said.
Strategic Implications for Türkiye
The warning comes at a time when the Middle East faces heightened instability. Any prolonged conflict involving Iran could reshape regional migration patterns.
Türkiye, already hosting millions of refugees and migrants, would face significant logistical, economic and political challenges in the event of a new large-scale influx.
While the government has not yet outlined a new migration contingency plan, opposition figures argue that early coordination between civilian and military institutions is critical.
