Ankara Buzzes With Talk of a Surprise “Third Alliance” Outside Turkey’s Main Blocs

Political circles in Ankara are abuzz with reports of a potential new alliance that could reshape Turkey’s opposition landscape. Several centre-right and conservative parties are holding exploratory talks aimed at creating a “third way” outside the ruling and main opposition blocs, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Exploratory Talks Signal Search for a “Third Way”

Contacts are continuing among political parties described as seeking a “third way” in Turkish politics, a concept referring to an alternative alignment outside the country’s entrenched political blocs.

According to parliamentary sources, the parties forming the New Path group in parliament — Saadet Partisi, Gelecek Partisi and DEVA Partisi — are said to be close to developing a new cooperation model with Yeniden Refah Partisi, according to political insiders.

In addition, talks are reportedly under way with İYİ Parti, Anahtar Parti and Demokrat Parti, potentially expanding the scope of the initiative.

Aim: A Broader Centre-Right Platform

The goal of the discussions is to create a broader political platform capable of appealing to centre-right and conservative voters who feel unrepresented by existing alliances, people familiar with the process said.

While some party leaders involved in the talks have privately expressed views on a possible presidential candidacy, sources stressed that the current negotiations are not being shaped directly around the presidential election. Instead, the focus is on structural cooperation and the search for a shared political framework.

Targeting Undecided Voters

According to reporting by Cumhuriyet, the parties involved aim to attract voters who remain undecided or dissatisfied with both the government bloc and the main opposition.

Political observers say the emerging framework may not be limited to a formal party merger and could evolve into a broader cooperation model during the election process, depending on how talks progress.

Earlier Speculation Pointed to Wider Realignment

Previous political speculation suggested that Yeniden Refah might distance itself from the ruling alliance and seek common ground with Saadet, Gelecek, DEVA and İYİ Party. At the time, reports said discussions included options ranging from a single umbrella structure to a looser electoral alliance, as well as second-round election scenarios.

Those earlier discussions were described as exploratory, with no concrete decisions reached — a characterization that sources say still applies to the current talks.

Uncertain Outcome, Potential Impact

While it remains unclear whether the contacts will result in a formal alliance, analysts say any coordination among five or more parties could alter Turkey’s political arithmetic, particularly if it consolidates votes from the fragmented centre-right and conservative spectrum.

For now, participants are said to be proceeding cautiously, testing compatibility and political appetite before committing to a more defined structure.
