Türkiye to Export Electricity and Gas to Syria Amid Power Crisis

Syria is finalizing a deal to import electricity from Türkiye through a 400-kilovolt transmission line, Syrian Energy Minister Mohamed al-Bashir announced on Sunday, according to the country’s state news agency SANA.
The agreement, which is expected to be signed “soon,” marks a significant step in Syria’s attempts to overcome severe electricity shortages plaguing the country since the onset of its civil war.
Additionally, Syria and Türkiye are planning a natural gas pipeline connecting the Turkish border town of Kilis with Aleppo, a strategic city in northern Syria. The new pipeline will supply up to 6 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, which will be used to fuel Syrian power plants and stabilize the country’s energy grid.
Syria has previously explored similar energy cooperation with Gulf countries, seeking to rebuild its devastated infrastructure and attract investment in electricity and gas sectors.
Sudan’s War Escalates as RSF Drones Hit Port Sudan
Meanwhile, in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a drone strike on Port Sudan early Tuesday, targeting critical infrastructure including the airport, the maritime port, and a hotel, according to military officials.
The attack marks the second strike on the city this week. Port Sudan had remained a relative safe haven and has been serving as the interim base for Sudan’s military-aligned government, as well as for UN agencies and aid groups.
Eyewitnesses described loud explosions and rising smoke. Fires were still burning by late Tuesday morning. Local journalist Msha’ashir Ahmed reported ongoing blazes in the southern parts of the port.
Although no casualties were immediately confirmed, the strike followed a previous RSF attack that shut down air traffic and ignited a military ammunition warehouse at the Othman Daqna airbase, causing a fire that burned for two days.
The drone barrage is believed to be retaliation for a Sudanese military strike earlier this month on Nyala airport in South Darfur, an RSF-controlled site used for weapons shipments, including drones.
