Turkey Vows Crackdown on Post-Earthquake Real Estate Price Hikes

istanbul

Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the Marmara Sea, which was widely felt across Istanbul and surrounding regions, Turkey’s Ministry of Trade has launched an investigation into sudden spikes in real estate listings. Reports surfaced that rental and sales prices for properties—particularly in high-demand urban zones—increased sharply in the aftermath of the quake.

Deputy Minister of Trade Mahmut Gürcan issued a stern warning via social media, stating that opportunistic price gouging will not be tolerated.

“If any unjustified price increases in real estate listings are identified, administrative sanctions will be imposed immediately and without delay,” he declared.

“Strict Oversight Against Exploitative Behavior”

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to protecting citizens from predatory practices, particularly during times of crisis.
Gürcan wrote:

“As the Ministry of Trade, we are closely monitoring developments in the real estate sector following the April 23, 2025 earthquake in Istanbul. We are taking firm action to prevent any practices that could harm or exploit citizens.”

He further called on real estate firms and private sellers to act with social responsibility, stressing that the public’s vulnerability should not be exploited for financial gain:

“During such sensitive times, both businesses and citizens must act with a sense of collective responsibility.”

Online Listings Under Scrutiny

According to Gürcan, major listing platforms are now under watch, with officials collecting data on suspicious price changes. The Ministry confirmed that legal and financial penalties will be swiftly enforced against any individuals or companies found guilty of manipulating prices for profit during this period.

In the wake of the earthquake, a tight regulatory process is now underway to prevent price speculation and market manipulation. Property listings for both sales and rentals are being closely reviewed, with authorities ready to act against any abuse of market conditions.

Government Signals Zero Tolerance on Disaster Profiteering

As public outrage grows over attempts to profit from disaster, Turkey’s government is moving to reassure citizens that it will stand firm against exploitation in the real estate sector.

This initiative highlights the state’s broader effort to maintain market integrity and ensure that natural disasters are not turned into commercial opportunities at the expense of public welfare.
