Son of Former Deputy Speaker Fehmi Işıklar Kills Mother in Tragic Incident in İzmir

A tragedy has shaken the Turkish political sphere as Can Işıklar (28), son of former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmet Fehmi Işıklar, fatally shot his mother Gülay Işıklar (54) in İzmir’s Foça district. The incident, initially described as an accident by the suspect, unfolded under tense and emotional circumstances, revealing a pattern of domestic tension.
The Incident: Early Morning Shooting
On April 20, residents of Hacıveli neighborhood reported hearing gunshots coming from the Işıklar family home. Gendarmerie units dispatched to the scene discovered that Gülay Işıklar had been shot dead. Her son, Can Işıklar, was immediately taken into custody.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident followed a verbal altercation after Can returned home around 5 a.m. following a traffic accident. He reportedly crashed his car—a vehicle with the license plate 35 AGV 328—but managed to return home on his own.
During questioning, Can allegedly responded with gunfire after his mother scolded him with the words, “Why are you coming home at 5 in the morning?” He initially told authorities that the shooting was accidental, but was formally arrested and charged following his court appearance.
Family Grieves as Investigation Continues
The victim’s daughter, Dicle Işıklar, and other relatives collected Gülay Işıklar’s body from the İzmir Forensic Medicine Institute, where an autopsy had been conducted. Photos and videos from the scene showed the family in deep grief.
The court has ordered Can Işıklar to be held in pre-trial detention as the investigation proceeds.
Political Legacy in the Background
The victim was the wife of Ahmet Fehmi Işıklar, a well-known political figure who served as Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) and was a member of Parliament for both Bursa and Diyarbakır during the 1987 and 1991 legislative terms.
Fehmi Işıklar began his political career with the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP), later becoming chairman of the People’s Labor Party (HEP). He held senior roles in both SHP and CHP, including deputy party chair.
The killing has sent shockwaves across Turkey, especially due to the high-profile nature of the family involved and the tragic circumstances leading to the event.
