Şimşek and Bessent Discuss Economic and Strategic Ties in Washington Meeting

Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek met with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during the G20, IMF, and World Bank Spring Meetings held in Washington, D.C., to explore deeper economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

According to an official statement from Turkey’s Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the meeting—which also included Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan—took place in a constructive and collaborative atmosphere.

Focus on Removing Restrictions and Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The discussion emphasized advancing U.S.-Turkey relations in line with the joint political will expressed by Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Donald Trump. Particular attention was given to boosting cooperation in investment, trade, transportation, and energy.

“The importance of lifting existing restrictions in the defense industry was underlined in order to enhance cooperation in this critical area,” the statement noted.

Türkiye’s Economic Stabilization Program Presented

Minister Şimşek also briefed his American counterparts on Turkey’s ongoing economic stabilization efforts, outlining reforms aimed at restoring market confidence, fighting inflation, and attracting foreign investment.

This high-level dialogue marks a step toward rebuilding trust and expanding strategic economic ties between Ankara and Washington amid shifting global and regional dynamics.
