Seven-Day Visa Boosts Turkish Tourism Surge to Greece

A seven-day visa-on-arrival initiative for Turkish citizens is reshaping tourism flows in the Mediterranean, positioning Türkiye as one of Greece’s fastest-growing tourist markets in 2024. The program, which simplifies entry for Turkish nationals by allowing them to obtain a visa upon arrival, has significantly streamlined travel procedures, resulting in a dramatic spike in arrivals from Türkiye.
This visa facilitation policy has not only enhanced convenience for Turkish travelers but also played a strategic role in reviving Greece’s tourism sector post-pandemic. According to the Visa Greece study, the program directly contributed to the surge in Turkish tourism, reinforcing Türkiye’s role in Greece’s broader tourism recovery.
Greece’s Tourism Rebound in 2024
The year 2024 marked a 17% rise in total international arrivals to Greece, demonstrating steady momentum in the industry. The United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Cyprus also remained among the top source countries. Athens led as the most visited destination, benefiting from both transatlantic travelers and regional tourism.
The influx of Turkish visitors, paired with the resurgence of other key markets, signals a robust recovery for Greece’s tourism industry, which was severely impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spending Habits Shift Toward Digital Payments
A key finding of the study was the growing preference among international tourists for digital transactions. Card usage dominated tourist expenditures, marking a trend toward cashless travel across Greece.
Total tourist spending rose by 14% year-over-year, with approximately 25% of that spending directed toward nightlife, dining, and beverage services — key drivers of Greece’s leisure appeal. Supermarket purchases accounted for 8% of tourist budgets, reflecting the growing demand for local lifestyle experiences among visitors.
Strategic Partnership Fuels Data-Driven Tourism Growth
The study was part of an ongoing collaboration between Visa and the Greek Ministry of Tourism, established in 2022 to accelerate Greece’s tourism recovery through data analytics and strategic planning. The initiative aims to attract high-value tourists, extend the tourism season beyond summer, and modernize the country’s tourism offerings.
During a media event in Athens, Visa Greece’s Country Manager outlined how real-time data from spending behavior and destination performance will be used to refine Greece’s tourism strategy and strengthen its positioning in the Mediterranean travel market.
Benchmarking and Future Tourism Policies
Visa’s insights offer a detailed lens into traveler behavior, enabling Greece to benchmark its performance against neighboring Mediterranean destinations and fine-tune marketing and infrastructure strategies. The focus is increasingly on tailoring experiences for specific tourist demographics, particularly high-spending travelers.
Long-Term Gains from the Turkish Visa Program
The seven-day visa program is expected to yield lasting diplomatic and economic benefits. It not only boosts cross-border travel between Greece and Türkiye but also helps deepen bilateral ties. As a model of tourism facilitation, the program is gaining attention as a potential blueprint for regional cooperation in travel policy.
With Turkish arrivals surging and overall international demand on the rise, Greece appears poised for continued growth. By leveraging real-time analytics and forging strategic alliances, the country is securing its place as one of Europe’s top travel destinations.
