Natural Gas Sees Biggest Price Hike, Potatoes Cheapest in July: TÜİK Report

Turkstat (TUIK)

According to the latest consumer price index (CPI) data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), natural gas and related subscription fees recorded the highest monthly price increase in July 2025, surging 26.41%. On the other hand, potatoes became the most affordable item, with a 15.92% drop in price.

Top Price Increases in July

Natural gas was followed by sharp increases in other sectors:

  • Passenger transport by sea and inland waterway: +19.71%

  • Cocoa powder: +15.85%

  • Beer: +13.91%

  • Alcoholic beverages (rakı, whiskey, vodka, etc.): +11.24%

  • Health insurance: +7.28%

  • Fuels and oils for personal vehicles (gasoline, diesel, motor oil): +6.71%

The rise in natural gas prices is likely linked to seasonal usage shifts, regulatory adjustments, and currency fluctuations, which can significantly affect energy import costs.

Biggest Price Drops: Potatoes Lead the Way

On the flip side, several essential goods saw significant price cuts:

  • Potatoes: −15.92%

  • Breakfast cereals: −9.61%

  • Fresh fruits: −8.75%

  • Women’s clothing: −8.23%

  • Men’s clothing: −6.98%

Analysts point to seasonal harvest surpluses and demand contraction in non-essential goods like fashion as drivers behind these decreases.

Inflation Context

Although inflation figures for July were reported at 2.06% monthly and 33.52% annually by TÜİK, independent research groups like ENAG noted significantly higher rates, indicating ongoing debate over the true pace of inflation.
