Most Turks Oppose Trump’s Gaza Proposal, MetroPOLL Survey Finds

In a significant reflection of Turkish public sentiment, MetroPOLL Research’s February 2025 “Türkiye’s Pulse” survey reveals that a large majority of respondents oppose former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to place the Gaza Strip under U.S. administration.
According to the results, 68% of participants believe the government should reject the idea, while only 5.4% support it. An additional 20.2% advocate for a neutral stance. The survey included responses from 2,047 individuals across 28 provinces, conducted via computer-assisted telephone interviews between February 23–27. The margin of error is reported at ±2.16%.
Trump had announced his vision for Gaza on February 4, stating:
“We’ll take over Gaza, rebuild it, remove unexploded ordnance, and turn it into a place the Middle East can be proud of.”
His plan reportedly includes the relocation of nearly 2 million Palestinians and potential deployment of U.S. troops in the region. While the proposal emphasizes redevelopment and stabilization, critics warn it could breach international law and raise concerns over forced displacement.
The MetroPOLL findings show consistent opposition across party lines:
-
70.2% of AK Party voters
-
71.1% of CHP voters
-
72.2% of MHP voters
also opposed the proposal. Similarly, İYİ Party and DEM Party supporters largely disagreed with the idea.
International reaction to Trump’s comments has been overwhelmingly negative. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the plan as “ethnic cleansing”, while legal experts argue that such a move would violate principles of sovereignty and international humanitarian law.
