The death toll in northern Iraq’s Pençe-Kilit Operation Zone has risen to 12 Turkish soldiers, following a methane gas leak in a cave reportedly used by terrorist groups. The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) confirmed the tragic development and extended condolences to the nation.
Fatal Gas Leak During Search Operation in Terrorist Hideout
The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) reported that during ongoing search and sweep operations in the 852 Rakımlı Tepe region on 6 July 2025, four additional soldiers lost their lives after being exposed to methane gas inside a cave linked to terrorist activities. These new casualties brought the total number of fallen personnel to 12.
According to the official statement:
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. We extend our prayers for our heroic martyrs, convey our heartfelt condolences to their grieving families, the Turkish Armed Forces, and our noble nation. We also wish a swift recovery to the affected personnel.”
The Pençe-Kilit Operation, which has been ongoing in northern Iraq, targets PKK strongholds and associated infrastructure. Operations in rugged terrain often involve clearing booby-trapped caves and underground shelters, posing chemical and environmental hazards beyond direct combat.
