Mansur Yavaş: No Concessions to PKK, Democratic Oversight Needed for Peace Process

Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş made his first public remarks regarding the PKK’s announcement to disarm and dissolve, highlighting both support for a terror-free Türkiye and concerns about state integrity and public sentiment.
In a statement released on social media, Yavaş acknowledged that the PKK’s decision was a result of years of unyielding military and political pressure, primarily led by the Turkish Armed Forces. He noted that opposing such a development is “not possible” if it stems from Türkiye’s uncompromising stance on terrorism.
No Room for Bargaining with Terrorists
While supporting the end of armed conflict, Yavaş firmly cautioned against any process that could be seen as the Turkish state negotiating with a terrorist organization.
“Any initiative that would suggest the Republic of Türkiye is bargaining with PKK members, or that causes distress among our citizens, must never be allowed,” he said.
He emphasized the sacrifices of fallen soldiers, adding, “We cannot cause pain to their families under any circumstances.”
Call for Transparency, Legal Integrity, and Possibly a Referendum
Yavaş urged the government to manage the transition in full accordance with constitutional law and public oversight, stating that parliament should be the sole authority overseeing this sensitive process.
“If legal changes are required, then a referendum should be held so that the people can decide,” Yavaş added.
He stressed that the process must be transparent, lawful, and rooted in democratic legitimacy, pointing to the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) as the rightful venue for national decisions.
Lozan Agreement Is Untouchable, Says Yavaş
In a broader message, Yavaş referenced the Treaty of Lausanne, calling it the foundational document of Türkiye’s national unity, and emphasized that its status must never be up for debate.
“The Treaty of Lausanne is the deed of a homeland won under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. It is the guarantee of coexistence on this land,” he stated.
