İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu appeared in court today in Silivri, where he faces charges of “threatening and targeting public officials engaged in anti-terror duties” over comments he made regarding judge Akın Gürlek.

If convicted, İmamoğlu could face up to 7 years and 4 months in prison, along with a ban on holding public office and disqualification from electoral eligibility.

Security Cited as Reason for Silivri Venue

Wearing a navy suit and tie, İmamoğlu entered the courtroom calmly. Authorities stated that the hearing was held in Silivri for security reasons.

When asked if he had a criminal record, İmamoğlu replied:

“No prior convictions, thank God.”

Key Highlights from İmamoğlu’s Courtroom Defense

In a powerful courtroom statement, İmamoğlu underscored the political motivations behind his trial. Shared by Sözcü TV, key excerpts from his defense included:

“I’m here because I’ve won elections in Istanbul—three times—where some claim to be its ‘true owner.’”
“Instead of spreading lies, let TRT broadcast this hearing if they’re really public broadcasters.”
“Release the students you’ve imprisoned—they are like my children. This is unjust.”
“You can’t intimidate me. Wherever there is injustice, I will stand beside the victim.”

“Looking at Me, You See the Turkish Flag”

İmamoğlu pushed back strongly against the accusations of threats:

“Threats? Please. I’ve never even been in a fight in my life.”
“Ask anyone from my village—I’ve always been a peacemaker.”
“I’m not someone you can associate with terrorism. When you look at me, you see the Turkish flag, Atatürk, and the Turkish nation.”

“Accountability Should Apply to Everyone”

Addressing the broader implications of the case, İmamoğlu stated:

“I never said I’m above the law. I’ve never even checked the prosecutor’s resume. I can and should be held accountable—but so should the president and the ministers.”
“For 10 years, I’ve been accountable to inspectors in municipal office. Let’s apply that standard equally.”
