Hong Kong to Strengthen Belt and Road Ties with Türkiye as InvestHK Chief Visits Istanbul

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is set to deepen its economic partnership with Türkiye as part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) strategy, with a visit by Alpha Lau, Director-General of Investment Promotion at InvestHK, the city’s lead investment agency.

Lau arrives in Istanbul tomorrow to engage directly with Turkish businesses eyeing Asian expansion, positioning Hong Kong as a strategic launchpad for access to mainland China and the Asia-Pacific.

“Hong Kong’s status as a global financial hub and its Belt and Road connectivity make it the ideal platform for Turkish enterprises,” Lau said ahead of the visit.

Growing Bilateral Trade and Tax Cooperation

Türkiye currently ranks as Hong Kong’s 30th largest trading partner, with HK$16.6 billion in bilateral merchandise trade recorded in 2024.

The two economies further strengthened ties with the Hong Kong–Türkiye tax treaty signed in 2024, aimed at eliminating double taxation, enhancing legal clarity, and supporting smoother cross-border investment flows.

Strategic Expansion in Türkiye

In a sign of long-term commitment to the Turkish market, InvestHK opened a second office in Izmir in January 2025, complementing its existing operations in the country. The move is designed to promote trade and investment opportunities, especially for Turkish firms seeking to tap into ASEAN, Greater China, and broader Asian markets.

High-Level Engagements in Istanbul

During her visit, Lau will:

  • Speak at the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Business Seminar

  • Address a Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK) event

  • Meet local media to spotlight Hong Kong’s pro-business policies, infrastructure, and global connectivity

Her engagements aim to build confidence among Turkish stakeholders, encouraging them to leverage Hong Kong’s role as an international business gateway.

“We are focused on demonstrating how Hong Kong can accelerate Turkish companies’ success across Asia and beyond,” Lau stated.
