A gunshot incident occurred in Çumra, Konya, targeting a CHP campaign announcement vehicle ahead of the party’s planned rally on May 3. The vehicle, which was broadcasting event details via loudspeaker, included CHP Konya Provincial Deputy Chair Mustafa Durmaz and District Deputy Chair Muhammet Keskince.

According to Durmaz’s social media statement, the attack happened during a promotional tour for the upcoming Konya rally. He stated:

“While making announcements in Çumra with our Karaman District Deputy Chair Muhammet Keskince, our vehicle was fired upon. Repression will not intimidate us.”

Both officials filed a formal complaint at the Çumra police station.

CHP Officials Condemn the Incident

CHP Deputy Chair Erhan Adem condemned the attack, saying:

“Our vehicle was blocked and a gun fired into the air during our rally promotion. This is a disgraceful assault. No force will stop us from establishing the people’s will.”

He emphasized that this, along with another legal incident involving a party bus driver sentenced to house arrest on the same day, reflects systemic double standards and growing intolerance toward democratic opposition.

“One is punished for doing his job, while another fires a weapon and walks free—this is not justice,” Adem said. “These are attacks on our right to political activity and the people’s democratic will.”

Official Statement and Suspect’s Defense

The Konya Governor’s Office later confirmed the suspect was apprehended with a blank-firing pistol. In a statement, suspect M.K. claimed he has sympathy for the CHP, and fired the weapon out of excitement upon seeing the vehicle, which had a license plate from his hometown (70).

Authorities conducted searches of the suspect’s home, workplace, and vehicle, finding no criminal materials. The individual was placed in police custody and referred to Çumra Public Prosecutor’s Office.
