Frost Wave Devastates Crops Across Türkiye, Food Prices Soaring

A severe cold wave has caused significant agricultural damage across Türkiye—most notably in the Aegean region—triggering a sharp rise in fruit and vegetable prices at local markets. The impact has been especially hard on low-income citizens and retirees, many of whom are now struggling to afford even the most basic food items.
Agricultural Damage, Soaring Market Prices
The recent frost-related agricultural losses have severely disrupted supply chains, pushing prices to record highs in open-air markets.
According to BirGün, Emine Kişkin, a retiree, said:
“We used to come to the market thinking it was cheaper. Now even that’s no longer true. We go late in the day hoping prices drop, but we can only afford one tomato or cucumber.”
Another local, Zeynep Uçar, added:
“Prices go up before our pensions even hit the bank. Every week, it’s more expensive. People leave the market empty-handed.”
Vendors and Farmers Also Struggling
Market vendors are also reporting significant challenges. Emrah Yiğit, a stall owner, said:
“The frost destroyed most crops. There’s little product, and what we can get is expensive. We’re not selling—we’re losing money. Neither farmers nor sellers are making a profit.”
Eyüp Tunç, a retired worker who continues working as a market vendor to make ends meet, shared:
“I worked for years and still can’t survive on a pension. There are crowds, but no buyers. Life is hard for everyone now.”
Political Response
In the wake of these losses, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) has called on the government to urgently support farmers affected by the frost, urging the state to step in with emergency aid.
