Fidan Urges U.S. to Rethink Gaza Support

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday urged the United States to reconsider its stance on Israel’s military operations in Gaza, warning that sustained U.S. backing contributes to what he termed "a genocide" and poses a threat to global peace and stability.
Speaking at a press conference, Fidan emphasized that the continuation of the conflict is largely made possible through ongoing U.S. political and military support, particularly under the administration of President Joe Biden.
“So far, the continuation of the current genocide has been made possible through U.S. support, particularly due to the policies initiated during Biden's term. Trump, during his time in office, contributed to the establishment of a ceasefire through his efforts,” Fidan stated.
He added that the new U.S. administration must be “better informed” about the global risks of the conflict, and urged for a more balanced approach to facilitate lasting peace.
Global Opposition Grows Against Israeli Actions
Fidan noted that international criticism of Israel continues to mount, though countries differ in how openly they voice their concerns. He highlighted that during a recent United Nations vote, 156 countries opposed Israel, demonstrating overwhelming global condemnation.
“The inability to stop a problem that nearly the entire world agrees on shows the depth of the legitimacy and systemic crisis facing the international order,” he remarked.
Türkiye’s Diplomatic Actions and Strategic Position
When asked about Türkiye’s role, Fidan stressed that Ankara has already exhausted all measures within its jurisdiction to pressure Israel. These include:
-
Suspending trade relations,
-
Recalling its ambassador, and
-
Pushing for coordinated action through multilateral platforms such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), D-8, and the Arab League.
“From the very beginning, Türkiye has taken all actions within its sphere of influence,” Fidan said. “But as long as support from Europe and the U.S. continues — where economic and political power is concentrated — this genocide will persist.”
He emphasized that Islamic countries’ collective stance, though symbolically strong, has limited leverage over the situation as long as Western support remains unchanged.
A Long-Term Risk to Global Order
Fidan also warned that continued Western endorsement of Israel’s Gaza campaign could have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate humanitarian crisis.
“This situation will create costs for the international system — not just short-term, but medium- and long-term as well,” he warned.
He concluded by underscoring the importance of maintaining international awareness about the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, adding, “The sensitivity toward Gaza must absolutely not fade away.”
