Erdoğan and Putin Hold Phone Call on Ukraine, Regional Issues

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation addressing the latest developments in the Russia–Ukraine war and broader regional issues, according to Russian news agency Interfax.

Putin Briefs Erdoğan on Alaska Meeting with Trump

Interfax reported that Putin shared his assessment of his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska during the call.

The Kremlin, in a statement cited by Russian media, noted:

“The Russian side expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s support in facilitating negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives in Istanbul. Current bilateral issues were also discussed, including trade and investment cooperation.”

Both leaders agreed to maintain direct personal contacts moving forward.

NATO Secretary General Also Called Erdoğan

Separately, Türkiye’s Presidential Communications Directorate announced that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte phoned Erdoğan on his way back from the White House’s Ukraine summit.
The statement said the two discussed the peace process between Russia and Ukraine and highlighted “Türkiye’s important role in the Ukraine peace efforts and the security of the Black Sea.”

Foreign Ministers’ Diplomatic Engagements

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also spoke with his British counterpart David Lammy and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul about the outcomes of the Alaska and Washington Ukraine meetings.

Macron Proposes Expanded Talks Including Türkiye

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that after a potential trilateral summit between Putin, Zelensky, and Trump, a follow-up meeting should include European leaders and Türkiye.
Macron stated:

“I would like a meeting where Europeans and even the Turks participate. In fact, I want all those directly affected by the consequences of this conflict on security to be at the table.”
