DEM Party Backs Bahçeli’s ‘National Unity Commission’ Proposal for New Constitution
Turkish Parliament
In a press conference held at the Turkish Parliament, DEM Party Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan voiced her party’s support for MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli’s proposal to establish a “National Unity Commission” to facilitate discussions on a new constitution.
Doğan stressed that Turkey urgently needs democratic reforms and a civilian constitution, calling on Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş to take initiative in launching an inclusive dialogue. She emphasized that constitutional discussions must be free from political calculations and grounded in broad societal consensus.
“This commission is a long-overdue initiative to address Turkey’s democratic deficit. It should no longer be overshadowed by political debates — a serious platform for dialogue must be established under the Parliament,” Doğan said.
Support in Light of PKK Disarmament Remarks
Doğan underlined the relevance of Bahçeli’s 100-member commission proposal especially after recent remarks by the PKK regarding disarmament and self-dissolution. She described the proposal as “timely and crucial,” positioning it as an opportunity for constructive national dialogue.
Parliament Speaker Should Lead the Process
Calling for a multi-party meeting chaired by the Speaker, Doğan stated:
“As a starting point, representatives or group leaders of all political parties should come together. Speaker Kurtulmuş must lead this process.”
“New Constitution Is a Shared Demand”
Doğan also responded to President Erdoğan’s call for a new constitution, asserting that it should not be driven by political interests, but by public demand for democratic change. She noted that despite ongoing talks with the Justice Ministry, the new constitution has not yet been formally discussed, but reiterated:
“It’s clear that Turkey needs a new, democratic, and civilian constitution. This issue must be addressed without delay and through broad consensus.”
