Burger Prices Skyrocket in Türkiye: Fast Food Now a Luxury
Fast Food
Old images of burger menu prices from 2016 have resurfaced on social media, reigniting public debate over Türkiye’s rising cost of living. A viral comparison shows how much prices at global chains like Burger King and McDonald’s have surged over the past decade, fueling frustration online.
A particularly striking example comes from a Burger King chicken burger menu, which was priced at just ₺4.95 in 2016. Fast forward to today, the same combo meal now costs as much as ₺150—a nearly 30-fold increase. The dramatic price jump has become symbolic of the country’s runaway inflation and declining consumer purchasing power.
The original post, which triggered this viral wave, was shared by the X account “Zam Haber”, featuring side-by-side visuals of the 2016 and 2025 prices. The comparison laid bare the steep climb in fast food costs, echoing broader concerns over economic instability.
Users across X (formerly Twitter) didn’t hold back. One remarked, “Even fast food is a luxury now”, while others linked the price surge to flawed monetary policies and structural economic issues. Many blamed currency devaluation and hyperinflation that have characterized Türkiye’s economic landscape especially since 2021.

The burger price controversy highlights a deeper issue: even basic dining options have become financially out of reach for many in Türkiye. What was once considered affordable convenience food is now another indicator of economic strain in everyday life.
