77% of Istanbul Residents Oppose Canal Istanbul, Says City Planning Agency Survey

A recent public opinion survey conducted by the Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), reveals that 77.2% of Istanbul residents oppose the Canal Istanbul project.
The findings were shared via IPA’s official social media channels and provide a clear picture of how the mega infrastructure project is perceived by locals.
Key Reasons for Public Opposition
According to the survey:
-
53.8% of respondents said they oppose the project due to its environmental impact
-
39.1% cited earthquake risks as a primary concern
-
31.2% believe the project is not based on public need, but instead designed to generate real estate speculation
These results underline growing public resistance against Canal Istanbul, a project critics have long described as ecologically harmful and geologically risky.
