Greek Island Visa on Arrival: Türkiye to See 5x Increase in Visitors

Greek island visa on arrival programs have sparked a massive surge in regional tourism, with the number of Turkish visitors jumping fivefold in recent years. Hakkı Karadeveci, President of the İzmir Regional Representative Board of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), confirmed that the popular program has been officially extended for another year across 12 Aegean islands.
The extension includes popular destinations such as Rhodes, Kos, Chios, Lesvos, Samos, Kastellorizo, Leros, Lemnos, Symi, Kalymnos, Patmos, and Samothrace. As challenges with standard Schengen visa appointments persist, these islands have become the primary alternative for Turkish travelers seeking accessible coastal vacations.
Flexibility and Travel Logistics for the 2026 Season
The most significant advantage of the Greek island visa on arrival is the flexibility it offers to last-minute planners. Unlike the lengthy wait times associated with traditional visas, this program allows travelers to finalize their holiday plans up to 10 days before departure.
However, travelers should note several key procedural requirements:
-
Pre-Approval Needed: Documents must be submitted to the relevant port authorities between 10 and 21 days in advance.
-
Not a Schengen Equivalent: This specific visa is only valid for the designated islands and does not grant entry to the Greek mainland or other European countries.
-
Port Wait Times: Visitors should expect processing time at the ports upon arrival as visas are physically stamped into passports after docking.
Infrastructure Upgrades to Reduce Border Delays
Following feedback regarding long queues and tour delays last season, Turkish and Greek authorities are working to streamline the entry process. Improvements are already underway at the Samos port, and the Chios (Sakız) port is set for a capacity expansion to better accommodate the high volume of Turkish tourists.
“We have shared concrete suggestions with the Greek Consulate based on past experiences,” Karadeveci stated, noting that these infrastructure upgrades aim to ensure a smoother transition for the high 2026 summer season.
Sustained Growth in Aegean Tourism
The Greek island visa on arrival is no longer just a summer phenomenon; it has evolved into a year-round trend. Small cruise itineraries covering multiple islands have become particularly popular, combining the ease of the entry program with diverse travel experiences. While the demand for standard Schengen visas remains high for mainland travel, the island program serves as a critical “safety valve” for the Turkish tourism sector, providing a reliable and attractive option for thousands of families.
